Peace I Leave With You; My Peace I Give To You

This meditation is based on a passage for April 26, 2011 in the Daily Lectionary Year 1 from the Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (1993).

Text: John 14:15-31

Reflection and Question: Jesus ends His long prayerful teaching in the Gospel of John with this characterization of how He will remain with His followers after His death and resurrection. Depending on what version of the Bible you are reading, this person is called the Advocate the Helper, the “paraclete,” or the Comforter. These are all attempts to capture in words the experience of the Holy Spirit that Paul speaks of and the book of Acts tells of. Jesus’ primary clue to us to know when we are tuned into the Comforter is that we will know peace, true, deep peace. When did the Advocate teach you something?

Prayer: Beloved Jesus, we know that You send to us the Holy Spirit to remind us forever of all that You said to Your followers. The Comforter will inspire us to love You and to obey all Your commandments. May this be so this very day, we pray. Amen.
